Wordless Wednesday - Sleeping and homeless

Not quite sleepless in San Francisco
San Francisco, CA, July 2008

There are no words. At this time of year, I simply find myself thinking about those who must go without, who have suffered immense loss, and I wish the world didn't have to be so harsh.

This is the final photo in support of this week's Thematic Photographic theme, quiet. (We're still taking entries here...it's certainly never too late!) At exactly 7:00 p.m. ET on Wednesday (hey, that's tonight!) I'll be posting the first entry in our next TP theme. To help you rev up your photographic creativity, I'm sharing the theme a little early here.

It will be...

Holiday

Since I know you're all in a holiday kinda spirit, I'm sure you'll have tons of great perspectives on this very timely theme. Hope to see ya back online after 7 o'clock tonight!

Your turn: The first thing that popped into your head when you saw this photo was...?

Carmi, I too think about those that are lost during this time of year. The contrast between the money unaccountably given to banks and industry who have and will continue to mismanage and rampantly, extravagantly reward, and what is give to people in real need is so harsh, so inexcusable that I find myself more angry than celebratory this year. Please visit my blog and watch the video I posted the other day. It will bring it all home. Thanks for the thoughtful post.

first thing was .... how sad that he probably has no place to go for the holidays ... no family ... no fancy dinner with all the trimmings ... and then I thought of the those that are even more unfortunate by being someplace like Pittsburgh (MUCH COLDER). Homeless & freezing & hungry. It breaks my heart.

The first thing that popped into my head came via my heart and broke it just a little.

My response in earlier days would have been, "Why can't he get a job like the rest of us? Then he wouldn't be in this situation."

As I've grown older and wiser, I hope, I realize that aperson can be only a paycheck away from the bench, or life circumstances can be such that it happens.

When I see a homeless person, I'm thankful over and over for a home and food. While I don't personally work at any shelters or organizations that help the homeless, I do contribute.

Sad. And Helpless. I know, that's two words but they're intertwined.

I think about people and animals who are homeless at this time of year, for the loneliness and the sadness and the danger of exposure to our brutal elements. I DON'T look away - and your lens doesn't either. Too many people do. Thanks for looking, Carmi. Might not be able to save these people from their plight but you dignify their existence by acknowledging it. You're wonderful.

How cold he must be. And broken-hearted for him. Wondering if he has family, & where they may be. Also that most of us are so spoiled & take for granted how much we have, how blessed we are.

Thanks for putting this out there. It's too easy to pretend it isn't happening when we don't see it right in front of us.

Oh how I can relate to the man in the photo. My heart breaks for him, and everyone who is without a warm and safe home, this time of year and all year 'round. Growing my parents were evicted from a lot of our homes, and we never knew what we were going to do from day to day. I am so thankful to have a home and a loving family. Happy WW and Happy Holidays.

the truth is, my first thought was how fortunate I am...

The first thing I thought was how sad it is that there is no one to take him in, give him a bed and food and warmth. But maybe there is, and he'd rather be alone. I read an article about a homeless guy here in our area who prefers to sleep outside alone. I cannot fathom that.
